Dear Colleagues,
The Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT) submitted a bid to host the XXIst Triennial World Congress of the FIT in 2017. A dedicated website was created to provide members of the International Federation with further information about AUSIT, its research initiatives, professional accreditation in Australia, partnerships with related organizations, and the proposed host city, Brisbane.
Australia is a vibrant, multicultural nation of over 22 million people, with roots in more than 200 countries. This diversity has shaped Australia into a culturally, ethnically, and linguistically rich society. Governments actively support Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities through policies and services, including translation and interpreting.
As the first country to establish a national accreditation authority for translators and interpreters, Australia is a global leader in quality standards and professional development. The country’s expertise in this field has attracted international attention, with delegates from around the world attending AUSIT conferences to study its practices. For those seeking specialized services, such as English - German - Turkish translations and interpreting, Australia’s multilingual capabilities are a testament to its commitment to bridging language barriers.
AUSIT was well-prepared to host the 2017 FIT Congress. With a proven track record of organizing successful biennial conferences and events, the association had the financial stability and organizational expertise to deliver an exceptional congress. Over the past four years, feasibility and risk assessments were conducted with professional conference organizers to ensure a seamless event.
Significant financial support was secured from the Queensland Government and the City of Brisbane. This support enabled scholarships to be offered to delegates from developing countries, providing them with the opportunity to attend an FIT Congress for the first time.
The bid proposed a diverse organizing committee, combining seasoned professionals with extensive experience in international congresses and fresh voices with innovative ideas. Together, they aimed to create a dynamic and forward-thinking conference program.
The Asia-Pacific region is the fastest-growing in the world, and the 21st century has been dubbed the “Asian Century.” Australia and New Zealand, with their multiculturalism and linguistic diversity, serve as a bridge between East and West. The region has extensive experience in translating emerging languages and is eager to share this expertise with the international community while learning from others’ experiences in return.
Brisbane, the proposed host city, is a vibrant destination known for its ideal climate, stunning landscapes, and rich cultural experiences. In October 2014, Brisbane hosted the G20 Leaders Summit, showcasing its capability to welcome global events. Delegates had the chance to explore iconic Australian attractions, including koalas, kangaroos, pristine beaches, lush rainforests, and the Great Barrier Reef—all within an hour of the city. The 2017 Congress in Australia offered the perfect opportunity to experience the “Land Down Under.”
The translation and interpreting industry is evolving rapidly, driven by globalization and technological advancements. From online content management and CAT tools to machine translation and real-time speech translation, the field is in constant flux. The 2017 Congress explored these contemporary issues, bringing together academics, practitioners, suppliers, and buyers to discuss the future of the profession.
AUSIT is committed to fostering professional relationships, promoting ethics and quality standards, and supporting industry research. The 2017 Congress in Brisbane provided an opportunity for global practitioners to network with local industry professionals, develop existing professional networks, and learn more about specific areas of professionalism and expertise in the Asia-Pacific region.
The 2017 FIT Congress in Brisbane was an unforgettable event, celebrating the diversity, innovation, and professionalism of the global translation and interpreting community. For inquiries about the Australian bid, the organizing team was available to provide further information. The FIT Congress in Berlin in August 2014 offered an excellent opportunity to learn more about the plans for 2017.
